Many people ask if Earthborn paints are suitable for them if they suffer from certain allergies, and the advice from the manufacturer is that in many cases, yes absolutely! Although it cannot be guaranteed that someone won’t have an allergic reaction to a specific ingredient in Earthborn paints, for the most part they can really help those who have allergies or reactions to conventional paints.
There are a number of ways that Earthborn paints are different, and often an ideal choice for those who have allergies:
1. No harmful odours
The first thing most people notice when they open a tin of Earthborn is that the paint has virtually no smell (in the case of Claypaint there is ZERO smell), which is such a pleasant surprise if you’ve been used to decorating with strong smelling paints.
2. Careful ingredient selection
Earthborn takes great care selecting ingredients that are free from well-known allergens, and do not use vinyl, acrylics or oils in any of their interior paints. They believe in transparency and list all ingredients on the side of their tins so customers can make an informed choice about whether a product is suitable for them. They do use preservatives, as little as they can get away with, because if they didn’t the paint would literally ‘go off’ before reaching their stockist’s shelves! However the amounts are tiny.
They use a food grade biocide - the preservative used contains a mixture of MIT (2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) and BIT (2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) as the active ingredient. Both are contained in the Claypaint in a dimension of 62.5 ppm (0.00625%), compared to the limit value given in the Eco Label criteria of 500 ppm. This is extremely low when compared to conventional paints.
Claypaint also contains a minimum of 35% clay content, so the luxuriously thick, creamy consistency of Claypaint comes from natural clay, rather than fillers.
Earthborn's Ecolabel accreditation means their paints are independently tested and manufactured to strict eco guidelines.
The breathability of Earthborn paints, in particular the moisture absorbing qualities of Claypaint, helps even out the humidity in a room, making for a healthier, more comfortable living environment.
4. A healthier environment
The clay in Earthborn Claypaint emits negative ions; higher ambient levels of negative ions are widely accepted as being beneficial to health and wellbeing, especially for allergy and asthma sufferers. Claypaint’s high clay content helps to destroy airborne odours and contaminants, and less static electricity build up reduces dust and allergens in the atmosphere.
It is never possible to guarantee that an individual will not have a reaction to a particular product or ingredient. For this reason, the manufacturer recommends potential users test the product first.
