Queen's 90th Birthday 2016

Haslemere Thespians wrote to thank us for a small donation our Haslemere branch gave towards materials to help them build a float for the Queen's 90th Birthday Carnival Procession, which took place in Haslemere on Saturday 23rd April 2016.

The day was very colourful and some 4,000 people turned out to celebrate!

The "1947" inspired Streetcar with its passengers in costume, was much admired by the crowds, and was the perfect way to help promote local drama and indeed the wonderful community spirit of Haslemere ... plus it was a great use of 5mm ply!

This particular year was chosen as it is not only the year that Tennessee Williams wrote "A Streetcar Named Desire" (which was to be their next show at The Haslemere Hall), but was the year the then Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip, which was widely celebrated throughout the world.

The Streetcar was not only visually very effective, but it also had a "live" broadcast over the tannoy of the events at Westminster Abbey as they unfolded, with all the passengers cheering along and waving their Union Jacks.  There was even their leading lady, the slightly badly behaved and dishevelled Blanche Dubois, putting on a real show for the onlookers!
