On 7 July 2018 the sum of £1,630 was raised for The Elizabeth Foundation at a 5 Sense Challenge held at Medstead Village Green.
The event was organised by Tilly and her brother Theo (aged 14 and 11) who wanted to give something back to the charities that have supported their family whilst their little sister was growing up.
As the benefactor was to be The Elizabeth Foundation, it seemed fitting to focus on using all human senses. The Elizabeth Foundation supports the development of listening and spoken language skills in children with hearing loss. The approach encourages the development of speech, language and listening by using all the child’s senses in a natural, fun, environment.
Tilly said: “On the day, we arrived on Medstead Green at 9am for a 2:30pm start. With the help of our cousins and other families, we spent 6 hours setting up gazebos, all of the challenges and most importantly the football area, containing the power generator needed to power the TV to screen England vs Sweden in the World Cup Quarter Finals!”
More than 13 teams of various ages took part in the event, which resulted in points and medals! The sense challenges were:
- “Sight” - shooting a nerf gun in an attempt to get the bullet through a hole, the smaller the hole the more points.
- “Touch” - guessing the object using only the sense of touch.
- “Smell” - guessing the flavour of jelly only using the sense of smell.
- “Taste” - guessing the flavour of crisp.
- “Hearing” - driving an electric car around a course, blindfolded, with only the instructions of team mates to go by.
In addition, there were some extra challenges, which included football darts, carrying water bombs, water soaking and the Stroop test. Our Alton branch was pleased to donate 4 cans of Everbuild Surveyline paint in red, blue, yellow and white, which was used for the marking out of the foot dart target and to guide runners on the route through the various challenges.
Mum Jo thanked us for the donation and commented: "The event was such fun. It was really hot, the World Cup football was on and the BBQ was smoking! The organizing was great and everyone involved did so much for such a worthwhile cause".
