Easy Garden Revamp

When it comes to revamping your garden, it’s not always about recreating a brand new garden from scratch, but improving what you already have.  Utilising and improving what you have is not only a cost-effective way of giving your garden a quick makeover, but is also a more eco-conscious choice.

We thought we’d share this little garden project which was rejuvenated with Coomers materials.  The main feature of this garden was an approximately 18 year old timber deck, originally supplied by Coomers.  The deck had done well as it was still structurally sound, thanks to regular maintenance with decking cleaners and preservers, although the original steps had begun to rot and the top rail had seen better days.  So rather than rip up a perfectly good deck, new steps and top rails were added by purchasing a few lengths of grooved timber decking at a fraction of the cost of replacing everything!

The garden borders had become overrun with weeds and brambles, which had been a constant problem to control, so weed block was put down and a thick layer of bark mulch added on top.  As the weeds had been such a problem, the owners decided to keep the borders plant-free but repurpose old paving slabs to place pots on in selected areas, making the garden very low-maintenance at the same time.  (The owners report that blackbirds love to dig in the bark mulch too!)

With the old deck being situated on a lawn, the owners noticed foxes had tried to dig a hole underneath, so to stop this happening and to enhance the appearance of the deck, a border was created around the deck and a generous layer of plum slate was added on top of the weed block.  As you can see, the slate blends perfectly with the deck and is appealing to look at whatever the weather, since it’s pale when dry and turns a deeper plum colour when wet.  Both the bark and slate have been held in place with treated timber used as border edgings, again supplied by Coomers!
