Inspiring Ideas for your Garden

If you're in the early stages of planning a garden makeover you'll probably be overwhelmed by the wealth of products and choices available, and whilst photos, websites and brochures are useful to help you make choices, there are times when you need to see and feel the actual products in real garden settings to seek inspiration for your own garden design. Also, for certain paving types, it's vital to view the product in person as the colours can look different depending on the weather conditions, and colours in printed or online literature can of course vary from reality.

Stunning inspirational displays

That's why we've created beautiful outdoor landscaping displays at Bordon to help you!  Here you can browse 15 individual gardens showcasing paving, block paving, walling, composite decking, fencing, artificial grass, sleepers and decorative stone from many of the leading suppliers including Pavestone, Bradstone, Brett, Acheson + Glover, Millboard, Grange Fencing and more!  Also, all our branches have indoor sample displays, so you can touch and feel real samples, and we're happy to order non-stock items for you too.

Low maintenance options

Landscaping materials are evolving all the time and as many of us have busy lifestyles these days, enjoying quality family time in the garden may be preferential to cleaning and maintaining it!  If that sounds appealing then you'll be pleased to know there are several low maintenance options available in both paving and decking materials.  Here are a few you may want to consider:

  • Porcelain is the latest in advanced paving.  Moss and algae cannot get established on it so minimal cleaning is needed, yet despite its name is robust, durable, frost-resistant and won't fade.  You can choose from a natural stone appearance in various colours or there's a couple of options which look like wooden planks!
  • Mosaic paving utilises the latest technology in surface printed concrete paving, creating a modern-day interpretation of Victorian tiles.  Use it to add a decorative feature to a large paved area, to brighten up a dark corner or to create a paved area in a small town house.  It benefits from M-Coat® protection, so splashes, stains including red wine, and algae & moss will be unable to penetrate the tough coating.
  • Composite Decking has all the charm of real wood but without the need for maintenance other than a simple wipe clean.  It’s slip, algae and stain resistant, and does not warp.  It’s available in a wide variety of stunning colours and finishes and comes with a 25 year residential warranty.
  • Artificial Grass is ideal for many garden areas including roof gardens, play areas, balconies, to compliment paving areas, or to replace your existing lawn.  It's also perfect for shaded or damaged areas where grass won't grow, and of course it won't go brown during extended dry spells!
  • And finally, whilst Decorative Stone & Bark have been around for a long time, don't underestimate how effective they can be when used in conjunction with landscape fabric.  In addition to helping reduce weeds, they make for attractive, low maintenance borders to complement your new garden!

Our No 1 paving

You might be interested to know that our top selling paving is Raj Blend natural sandstone from Pavestone.  Each slab has a unique natural colouration and texture/markings which combine to form a rich tapestry.  It's strongly advisable to view the stone prior to purchasing to fully appreciate the diversity of colours, as part of its character is that no two stones are coloured the same.  Seasonal changes will bring about differing perspectives to the colours, depending on whether it's viewed in strong summer sunlight (when it's paler) or during rainfall (when the colours become much deeper) ... and it's good to know that all our paving products are responsibly and ethically sourced, produced and quarried in line with the Ethical Trade Initiative.

Contemporary or traditional walling

Besides traditional cottage style walling, there are now some modern options which allow you to create stunning garden features beyond the customary wall.  For example, if you love entertaining you can incorporate a barbecue or drinks bar into your garden design with Pavestone Moodul modular block walling.  These unique interlocking blocks allow you to build anything from a simple planter, bench or small wall right up to an entire enclosed outdoor room.  The flexibility of these blocks also allow you the freedom to change your structure from time to time, by redesigning the feature as you wish (for structural walls above one metre in height it's advisable to use mortar or building block adhesive).  What's more, Moodul lets you go even further with a range of add-on accessories, so you can easily hang a flower box on your wall, build a shelf or create seating, all without drilling ... and if you fancy a change, simply move these accessories around, season to season!  You can also incorporate lighting into a Moodul wall for that extra touch of drama!

Alternatively, if you have a boring old brick wall that you'd like to cover, Slate Stack wall cladding is a new trend in outdoor and indoor wall décor and an inexpensive way of transforming old walls into modern contemporary works of art.  However, if you don’t have old walls to cover, new ones can be constructed from cheap concrete blocks and faced with Slate Stack wall cladding to provide an impressive finish.  This cladding could not be simpler to install - no pointing is necessary, just bond to the wall leaving no spaces.  The units can be easily cut to facilitate corners, window frames, doors etc.  Since Pavestone Slate Stack can be used inside or outside, other ideas for using it include indoor fire hearths, pillars, barbecues and water features.  And finally, complementary Slate coping can be supplied to add the finishing touch!

The perfect garden boundary

Besides traditional featheredge and lap fencing, Grange Elite Meloir panels are eyecatching with their wave top lattice and horizontal timber slats.  Alternatively if you're looking to mark a boundary, then you may want to consider timber palisade fencing, or even Wenlock metal railings with a modern and simplistic ball top design.  Matching gates are also available if required.

If you're looking for something a little different, how about an adjustable garden screen which can be used to zone off an eating or patio area in your garden?  This has slats which you can have open or tilted to create privacy, and it allows sunlight to reflect in different directions around your garden.  Alternatively, trellis is another great product to screen off areas in your garden, and in addition to being used as a framework for climbing plants, can also be used to great effect with fairy lights.

Block paving - not just for driveways!

A newly created driveway will not only improve your home, by adding aesthetic value, but may also increase the monetary value of your property!  Being strong and durable, it's ideal for creating a long lasting driveway that will look stylish for years to come.  Although mostly associated with driveways, it's incredibly versatile and can also be used on patios and pathways with great effect.  You'll find various styles, sizes and colours available, and what's more, these products come with guarantees for up to 30 years depending on the manufacturer!

Budgetary considerations

If you're a homeowner planning to employ a landscaper to install your paving, and you're trying to get an overall idea of the cost of the whole project, bear in mind that the cost of the paving is rarely the largest outlay, so upgrading from concrete to natural stone or porcelain will usually not significantly increase your overall costs as it generally takes the same amount of time to lay a patio whether it's premium natural stone or cheaper utility paving (assuming you're not wanting unusual patterns which require extra cutting).  So take time to get quotes and work out all the costs before you embark on a project.  Of course, if you're a competent DIYer and on a tight budget, then obviously you can save on installation costs and choose cheaper paving to keep the costs as low as possible.

If you're looking for a reputable landscaper and are not sure where to start, a good idea is to ask friends or neighbours who've had similar work done for recommendations, or alternatively our staff would also be happy to make suggestions.  It's also worth checking the manufacturer's website to see if they have a list of recommended installers in your area, as many have a "Find an Installer" or similar web page of trustworthy professionals.
