Rowledge School 2022

The Busy Bees Gardening & Wildlife Club, based at Rowledge C of E Primary School, is run by parents of children at the school and local residents on a voluntary basis and funded by external donations.  The garden is part of the “RHS Campaign for School Gardening” scheme and the Busy Bees have worked hard to achieve a Level 3 award for the garden, which (at the time of writing) they hoped would soon be followed by the next level.

The Club is run during school hours and its principle aims are to encourage all of the children in the school to:

  •     learn the joy of growing their own food;
  •     understand, appreciate and care for wildlife;
  •     learn how to re-use and repurpose everyday items; and
  •     garden for themselves and wildlife in harmony.

Although the children have been growing potatoes, carrots, radish, tomatoes, pumpkins, and chilli plants, as well as numerous pollinator flowers, the Club’s recent project was to install a pumpkin patch, which would allow the children to participate in local “pumpkin growing” competitions against other schools and to show the children the joys of growing pumpkins and cooking them in the autumn.  The school had been donated some timber sleepers to make the raised bed but needed a bulk bag of topsoil to fill it, so got in touch with us to see if we could help, and we were pleased to donate what they needed.

On behalf of Rowledge Primary School's Busy Bees Gardening & Wildlife Club, Sarah Womersley said:  “We cannot thank Coomers enough for agreeing to help us finish the project - the Reception class pupils are beyond excited about seeing pumpkins growing this summer!”
